TPA81 Thermopile Array Back

The TPA81 from Devantech is a thermopile array sensor which detects infrared in the 2um-22um range. This is the wavelength of radiant heat, therefore the TPA81 is unaffected by ambient light.

The TPA81 can detect a candle flame at a range of 2 metres.

It has an array of eight thermopile sensors arranged in a row. The TPA81 can measure the temperature of 8 adjacent points simultaneously. The module can also control a servo to pan itself around and build up a thermal image.

Communication with the TPA81 module is via the I2C bus. This is available on popular controllers such as the BASIC Stamp BS2P, as well as a wide variety of microcontrollers. I2C communications with a PIC microcontroller may easily be implemented using the PicBasic or PicBasic Pro compilers.
